In the data reviewed, the most state-dependent school districts received between roughly 50% and 61% of their total revenue from state funding. Many of these districts enroll fewer than 500 students.
Rural communities may be more exposed
Many of the districts with the highest state revenue dependence are located in rural areas across southern Missouri, including the Ozarks, the Bootheel, and south-central regions.
These districts often serve smaller student populations and may have limited local tax bases. If state funding falls, replacing that revenue locally could be difficult.

For school districts, budget vulnerability and lost funding can affect staffing, course offerings, student services, transportation, and the ability to retain educators.
